What is Lumbago?

This is the pain on your vertebral column, or lower part of your back.

The Spine allows us to walk on two feet; it distinguishes us of the other vertebrates that walk in 4 paws. It allows us to rotate and flexion our body, covers and protects the spinal cord.

Our vertebral column includes 7 cervical,12 thoracic, 5 lumbar vertebras and 5 sacrums and coccyx. The vertebras protect the spinal cord along with the vertebral discs that act as buffers.

At Lumbar level, hernias can compress to the nerves, and some of the symptoms may include pain or numbness that it is irradiated to the neck, thorax, abdomen or inferior members.

Diseases that cause back pain

Osteoarthritis -- this is a more common type of arthritis that tends to appear more in people of older age. It causes wearing away of cartilage at the joints, and frequently accompanied by the growth of the bone, formation of spurs and limitation of their function.

Spondylolisthesis-  this happens when one of the vertebras slips out of its proper position. It can be a cause of a degenerative condition, either traumatic or acquired. When this occurs, it compresses the spinal cord and its nerves causes pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis - condition in which there is inflammation and edema of the soft tissue in the joints.

Escoliosis -- condition in which the spine curves from side to side.

Pagets disease - it is a chronic illness that causes abnormal bone growth.

Arthritis.- this usually affects people at any age and it is associated with inflammation and increase of volume of the soft tissue and intrarticular sinovial fluid.

Ankylosing Spondilitis.- it is a chronic disease that causes inflammation of the joints between the spinal bones, and the joints between the spine and pelvis. It eventually causes the affected spinal bones to join together.

Reiters syndrome.-reiter's syndrome is a form of arthritis that produces pain, swelling, redness, and heat in the joints.

Cervical, thoracic and lumber Hernia

This happens when one of the "cushioning" of the vertebral column protrudes out of its original place. There is also an increase in synovial luiquids which together cause compression of the spinal nerves. The discs are composed of two parts, exterior part called the annulus fibrosis that is a tire like formation and the center portion called the nucleus pulposos which contains a gelatinous like material. A rupture in one of these discs.

Regularly it happens when there is an increase of cerebral spinal fluid and the disks loose some of their flexibility. The most common place that it occurs is in the lower part of the spine between L4and L5. Some of the symptoms when this occurs is pain in the gluteus that extends all the way to the leg (sciatic nerve). Sciatic nerve compression occurs in about 1 to 2% of the population. . The pain is caused because there is a protrusion and compression of the nerve. Sciatic or lumbar radiculopathy can cause weakness, numbness and tingling sensation.

In order to observe these pathologies, some exams must me done. An MRI should be taken in order to observe the soft tissue like the spinal chords, intra vertebral discs as well as muscles, tendons or tumors that may be surrounding it.

With Xrays degenerative problems can be seen in the column and the disks.CAT scan also observes the bones of the column and the area around it.

A myelogram uses a coloring substance that is injected to the spinal fluid, so the spine and the nerves appear. One can observe the pressure in the nerves of the disks with hernias, spurs or tumors that may be present.

Most of the time a variety of theses exams may be recommended in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Hospital Mexico Treatment

There are many different pathologies that can cause back pain, but we have found that the most common type of back pains are associated with Borreliosis or Lyme Disease and can be treated without surgery, and can be cured with simple antibiotic treatment.

We have 90% possibility of curing the chronic lumbalgia by treating the infection (generally for borrelia or lyme illness). the increased liquid that usually causes that hernia is decreased with the medication and the hernia decreases as well, decreasing along with it the pain that the patient feels.

Our treatment usually has a duration from 4 to 6 months but the pain always decreases within the first month.

Carla, has suffered 6 years with migraine.

Rene, 4 years with rheumatoid arthritis.

Florina, 3 years with Lupus.

Irene, diagnosed by fibromyalgia.

Dr. Manuel R. Lazo

Medical Director

Hi, I am Dr. Manuel Lazo, Hospital Mexico’ s medical director. We have been treating patients for over 20 years, and seen that the traditional treatments do not cure, but instead only calms the symptoms for a while, as the disease keeps progressing and the medications are not only expensive but they can have horrible side effects.

Our Hospital is one of the few places in the world where patients with migraine, arthritis, lower back pain and facial paralysis could be cured.

About our treatment

When you come here for consult, we do dark field microscopy in which we look for spirochaetes in your blood.

We take away your symptoms and cure your disease with antibiotics, depending on the patient and severity of the problem. We do not use natural or “alternative” medicine, only antibiotics which can be purchased at a pharmacy.
